Wananga
A wānanga is characterised by teaching and research that maintains, advances, and disseminates knowledge and develops intellectual independence, and assists the application of knowledge regarding ahuatanga Maori (Maori tradition) according to tikanga Maori (Maori custom).
Wānanga offer certificates, diplomas, and bachelor-level degrees, with some wānanga providing programmes in specialized areas up to doctorate level and are regarded as the peers of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education
Outside the formal education system, the word wānanga conveys meanings related to highly evolved knowledge, lore, and also "forum" - in the sense of a discussion to arrive at deeper understanding

Te Wānanga o Raukawa is a unique learning laboratory designed and built specifically for Māori. More than just educating our people, we wish to produce outstanding and sought after graduates who are Māori in the way they think, act and behave while also having the technical skills and qualifications they need to grow, inspire and uplift their whānau, hapū and iwi.
Our pioneering education framework, founded on tikanga and kaupapa tuku iho, promotes opportunities to learn about how the Māori mind conceptualised and responded to the world prior to being influenced by the language and culture of later settlers. This distinctively Māori approach to tertiary education is often the key to an individual’s academic success.
Many of our students have struggled within the confines of mainstream education but have thrived in the uniquely Māori environment provided at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. Compulsory te reo and hapū & iwi development components are a feature of every programme, from diploma upwards, ensuring all our graduates have a level of fluency in te reo and a critical understanding of tikanga Māori as it applies to their own hapū and iwi.
Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was established in 1991 by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, opened in 1992 and officially became a Wānanga in 1997. Awanuiārangi is one of only three institutions designated as Wānanga under the Education Act 1989.
The institution offers a range of qualifications, from community education programmes, Certificates and Diplomas to Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees.
Awanuiārangi provides educational opportunities to all Māori, New Zealanders and indigenous students through campuses based in Whakatāne, Auckland (Tāmaki) and Northland (Te Tai Tokerau), as well as through marae and community networks across the country.
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi aims to be a quality provider of Māori programmes within the tertiary education sector in Aotearoa. Of importance is the vision to promote, grow and sustain Māori language, knowledge and culture in all its manifestations and with regard to tikanga Māori practice.
