Polytechnics/Institutes of Technology

Polytechnics or Institutes of Technology delivers technical, vocational and professional education. They also promote research, particularly applied and technological research, that aids development.

Many of these institutions offer the full range of qualifications from Certificate level to Doctoral programmes. Most use a system of education known as 'staircasing' which means that you can work through each of the different levels of study.

There are 16 institutions in New Zealand, many of which have multiple campuses in different centres across the country.

Open Polytechnic is New Zealand's leading distance and online learning provider. Our focus is on student success for over 31,000 students each year, who use the flexibility of our distance and online learning services to gain the skills they need to progress in their jobs and careers.

There is industry involvement in the development of most courses and programmes and close relationships are also maintained with appropriate professional and industry bodies.

Over 100 qualifications and 1,200 courses staircase from certificate to diploma and degree level (Levels 1–7 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework).

They range from technical and vocational training to higher professional and continuing education.

Unitec Institute of Technology is the largest institute of technology, with more than 20,000 students enrolled in over 150 work-oriented programs. It offers employment-focused education with a dynamic, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable approach.

There are two campuses in Mount Albert and Waitakere. Unitec also offer ASHS a Partner Scholarship for a student to study at Unitec every year.

Manukau Institute of Technology is a leader in technical and vocational education, delivering a range of academic qualifications. This institute has six campuses across Auckland and is considered New Zealand's top institute of technology. The institution follows a balance of theory and applied learning and offers flexible qualifications and career paths.

MIT has a strength in Marine systems with campuses in Warkworth and on the waterfront, as well as a supercars programme based in Pukekohe.

Tai Poutini is noted as one of the fastest growing polytechnics in New Zealand. The courses offered range from mainstream and specialized programs which focus on preparing students for their chosen career.

With a number of campuses across the country, Tai Poutini is well known in Auckland for the Music Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ) campus.

NorthTec (Northland Polytechnic) provides programs ranging from foundation, certificate, diploma and degree levels. It has campuses and learning centers across Northland that makes it unique in its own sense.

Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) was founded to provide technical and trades training in the Waikato region. The total number of enrolled students is 26,362 and total international students are around 1,127. It covers a wide range of programmes from certificate to degree level study.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is the largest tertiary provider in the Bay of Plenty and the third largest institute of technology in New Zealand. The university is home to more than 14,000 students including more than 1,400 international students, more than 1,000 staff, and offers more than 150 programmes ranging from certificate to post-graduate level. Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is an amalgamation of two high performing institutions – Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga, and Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua in May 2016

Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) has been ranked as one of New Zealand’s top-rated New Zealand institutes of technology and polytechnics for research in the Performance Based Research Fund. It offers over 130 qualifications from certificate and diploma, to degrees and postgraduate level at campuses in Hawkes Bay, Tairawhiti, and Auckland. The institute offers work ready courses leading to job opportunities after graduation.

The Western Institute of Technology in Taranaki (WITT) is the largest tertiary education institution in New Plymouth. It is the 13th largest technical institute in New Zealand. The institute aims to promote a research-centric culture.

WITT qualifications offer the best in vocational education. Our courses have a strong applied learning component which supports the theory they learn in the classroom. WITT offers qualifications from a certificate, through to diploma and degree level.

UCOL qualifications are regarded in high esteem by the community and employers. We recruit lecturers who are industry-experienced, and the curriculum is a combination of practical experience and theory that its program contains.

Established in 1902, UCOL is a high-performing New Zealand government funded Institute of Technology and Polytechnic that offers a wide range of rewarding study options.

UCOL is well known in its local communities and also draws students from far and wide. We have campuses in Palmerston North, Whanganui, Wairarapa and Levin.

Whitireia is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body.

Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become the tertiary institution of choice for over 7,500 students (over 3,900 equivalent full-time students), who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Porirua, Wellington, Kāpiti and Auckland. Over 120 programmes of study are offered at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and masters levels. All programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications

The Wellington Institute of Technology – WelTec – is a tertiary institution training over 8000 students every year.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) has been awarded category 1 status for educational performance by New Zealand qualification authority (NZQA). The institute is known for state-of-the-art infrastructure. Students here gain real-life, practical, hands-on experience and valuable industry contacts through work placements.

With three campuses in Nelson, Blenheim, and Auckland, NMIT offer programmes from Certificate to Post Graduate level study.

Ara Institute of Canterbury is a vibrant, progressive, government-funded tertiary institute providing world-class, tertiary-level education throughout the Canterbury and Waitaki region. Ara was created in 2016 when education providers CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic merged, bringing together two well-established organisations and over 200 years of collective experience and success.

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) has four campuses and over 13,000 enrolled students. The institute offers more than 180 programs that are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. The institute has flexible programs and offers multiple intakes every year.

SIT were the first institution in the country to introduce a fees free scheme for students in the late 1990's. With the announcement of first year free from the incoming government, SIT have announced that first year accommodation at it's campuses will be free.
