What is Gateway?

The purpose of Gateway is to enable schools to provide senior students aged 16 years of age and over with opportunities to access structured workplace learning that has:

  • a formalised learning arrangement set in the workplace
  • specified knowledge and skills that a student will attain
  • specified assessment methods (workplace learning).

Schools should align their Gateway programmes to the Vocational Pathways, where possible. The Vocational Pathways provide a useful tool for course planning to provide cohesive learning options that are recommended by industry.

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) provides Gateway funding to meet the costs state secondary schools, state-integrated secondary schools, or partnership schools incur in arranging and managing workplace learning, including assessment.

At Albany Senior High School, Gateway is a structured Impact Project and as such occurs on a Wednesday. Students are interviewed, and those successful are placed into a Pre-Work programme providing essential customer service, and health and safety skills for the workplace. Students are also taken through the assessment standards which form part of Gateway (a minimum of 20 credits).

Gateway at ASHS occurs twice a year, over the Impact Project semesters. Gateway is structured as such:

  • Semester One: Year 13 and Year 12 students
  • Semester Two: Year 13, Year 12, and Year 11 students (must be 16 years or over)

While it is not a pre-requisite to have your own placement, it does help.

Please note: We will not place you in a workplace where you already have paid employment. It is against the law to be a secondary school student and in paid employment during school hours. Education Act 1989, Section 30 Subsection 1a, Section 71 Subsection 4a
